History of the Church
Long ago, this church was like a smaller chapel connected to a bigger church. That church was called St Oswald's in Ashbourne. Back then, it was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
Building the Church
You can see parts of the church that are from the Norman times. Look for the simple, rounded arch at the entrance. The church sits on a small hill. It was built in the 1200s, which is the 13th century.
It's made from strong stone and has a style called 'Early English'. The church has a main area called the nave. It also has a special area for the altar, known as the chancel. There's a porch on the south side. At the west end, you'll find a short tower with a small pointy top, called a spire. Over time, its dedication changed to Saint Michael and All Angels.
Changes Over Time
In 1842, the church got new pews. These are the long benches where people sit during services.
Church Bells
The church tower holds two very old bells. They are from the 1600s.
One bell is dated 1665. It has the words "God save the King, 1665" written on it. This bell was made by George Oldfield. The second bell has special marks on it. These marks are thought to be from Richard Mellour of Nottingham.
