How the Church Began
St Paul's Church was built between 1853 and 1855. It was designed by a famous architect named Anthony Salvin. The land for the church was given by the Langford-Brooke family, who lived nearby at Mere Hall.
The church was officially opened on March 18, 1855. But later that same year, a fire caused a lot of damage! Luckily, the church was fixed using Salvin's original plans and reopened in 1856.
What the Church Looks Like
Outside the Church
The church is built from sandstone and has slate roofs. It's designed in a style called Early English Gothic, which was popular a long time ago.
The church has a main area called the nave and a smaller area for the altar called the chancel. There's also a north aisle and a small room called a vestry. At the front of the church, there's a square bell tower with a unique hexagonal roof. You can also see cool cross shapes on the roof peaks!
Inside the Church
The inside walls of St Paul's Church are plastered. One of the most amazing things inside is a detailed wooden screen called a rood screen. It was carved in 1908 by F. H. Crossley. He also carved other parts of the church.
Look closely at the carvings on the chancel roof! You might spot badgers, which represent the Langford-Brooke family, and swans, which represent Over Tabley.
Stained Glass Windows
The church has beautiful stained glass windows. The windows at the east end and on the south side of the chancel are in memory of Thomas William Langford-Brooke. They were designed around 1884.
The window at the west end shows Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the nave, there are two more windows created around 1900 by Christopher Whall.
The Organ
The church originally had an organ built in 1855. However, it was replaced with a newer electronic organ in 1957.
Outside the Churchyard
In the churchyard, there's a special monument. It's a stone tomb for Henry Langford-Brooke, carved around 1909. It features a cool tree design and text in a special font called Gill Sans. This monument is also a listed building, just like the church!
