History of St. Peter's Church
The story of St. Peter's Church goes back a long time. There was an older chapel here called St. Mary's. It was built in 1459. This chapel became the main church for the area. This happened after another nearby church, St. Peter's Church, Flawford, was taken down in 1773.
The old church building needed repairs. It was fixed up in 1718. Then, in 1824, most of it was rebuilt. This work cost about £1,100. Only the chancel (the area around the altar) and the steeple (the tall tower) were kept from the very old church. In 1773, the church's burial ground was made sacred. It was also fenced in using some parts from the old Flawford church.
Rebuilding the Church in the 1880s
Most of the church, except for the tower, was rebuilt again. This big project was done by architects named Bell and Roper from Manchester. The work began on June 1, 1887. The new church cost about £12,000. It was officially made sacred on November 1, 1888. This special ceremony was led by George Ridding, who was the Bishop of Southwell at the time.
It is believed that the font, which is a basin used for baptisms, came from the medieval church at Flawford. This shows a link to the church's long history.
The Church Organ
St. Peter's Church has a large pipe organ. It has three keyboards, called manuals. This organ was built in 1908 by a company called Brindley & Foster from Sheffield.
