A Look at St. Peter's Church History

The story of St. Peter's Church goes back a long way. In 1459, there was a chapel called St. Mary's. This chapel became the main church for the area after St. Peter's Church, Flawford was taken down in 1773.

Early Repairs and Rebuilding

The church building needed some work over the years. It was repaired in 1718. Then, in 1824, most of the church was rebuilt. This cost about £1,100, which was a lot of money back then! Only the chancel (the area around the altar) and the steeple (the tall pointy part) remained from the very old church. In 1773, the church's burial ground was officially set aside for burials. It was also enclosed using some materials from the old Flawford church.

The Big Rebuild of 1888

Most of the church, except for the tower, was rebuilt by architects Bell and Roper from Manchester. The work began on June 1, 1887. The new church was very expensive, costing around £12,000. It was officially opened and blessed by Bishop George Ridding on November 1, 1888. Bishop Ridding was the Bishop of Southwell at that time.

It is believed that the font, which is a basin used for baptisms, came from the medieval church at Flawford. This means it's a very old and special part of the church's history.

The Church Organ

St. Peter's Church has a large pipe organ. It has three keyboards, called manuals. This organ was built in 1908 by a company called Brindley & Foster from Sheffield. It makes beautiful music for church services.
