St. Peter's Church in Farndon is a special church that belongs to the Church of England. It's located in a village called Farndon, in Nottinghamshire, England. This church is considered a very important building because of its amazing design and long history. It's even listed as a "Grade I" building, which means it's one of the most important historic buildings in the country!

The History of St. Peter's Church

The Church of St. Peter in Farndon was built a very long time ago. Some parts of the church are even older than others! It's believed that the church has been built and rebuilt over many years.

Early Beginnings and Saxon Times

The first church might have been built during the time of the Saxons. You can still see some parts of this very old Saxon work in the north wall of the church's main area, called the nave. This shows how ancient the church's roots are.

Medieval Changes and the South Aisle

Later, a second church was built. From this time, you can see the columns and arches in the south aisle. An "aisle" is a walkway on the side of the main part of the church. An "arcade" means a row of arches supported by columns.

The Current Church and Perpendicular Style

The church you see today is mostly built in a style called "Perpendicular." This was a popular way to build churches in England a long time ago. It means the buildings have tall, straight lines and big windows. The roof of the nave was built in 1664.

Special Features Inside the Church

Inside the church, there's a special bowl for baptisms called a font. This font is from the "Early English" period, which was a style used in the 12th and 13th centuries. There are also two beautiful stained glass windows. One is in the chancel (the area near the altar), and the other is in the aisle.

The Farndon Viking Sword Discovery

In October 1892, something very exciting was found when people were digging under the church. They discovered an ancient sword! It was about 72 centimeters (2 feet 4.5 inches) long. People think it might be a Saxon or even a Viking sword. This amazing sword is now kept safely in the church's vestry, which is a room used by the clergy. This sword is important because it might show that Vikings attacked the area around Newark-on-Trent a long time ago. You can even see a picture of this sword in a book called "History of Nottinghamshire" by David Kaye.

Church Bells

For many years, the church had four bells. Recently, two more bells were added, so now there are six! They were also re-hung, which means they were put back up properly so they could ring clearly.

Current Church Groupings

St. Peter's Church is part of a group of churches called the "United Benefice of Farndon with Thorpe and Hawton with Cotham." This means these churches work together.
