How the Church Was Built
The church you see today is not the first one on this spot. An older, medieval church was taken down. A new church was then built by architects named Bateman and Corser.
Laying the First Stone
The very first stone for the new church was put in place on September 11, 1878. A lady named Mrs. J. D. W. Digby had the honor of laying this important stone. The land for the church was a gift from G.W. Digby, who lived at Sherborne Castle in Dorset.
Opening the New Church
The new church was officially opened on October 7, 1879. The Bishop of Worcester held a special ceremony to make it ready for use. The church was built using strong stone from Derbyshire. It also has decorative parts made from Bath stone. The company that built the church was H. Mottram from Tamworth.
Changes Over Time
The church once had a tall spire, which is a pointy tower on top. However, this spire was removed in the 1980s.
The Church Organ
Inside the church, there is a musical instrument called an organ. This organ was made by a company called Forster and Andrews and was put into the church in 1885. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
