The Church of St Petrock is an old and important church located in a village called Timberscombe in Somerset, England. It has a tower that was built way back in the 1400s! The rest of the church building was mostly finished in 1708. This church is so special that it's been given a "Grade I listed building" status by English Heritage. This means it's considered a very important historical building.

Who Was Saint Petroc?

The church is named after Saint Petroc. He was a Christian saint who lived a very long time ago, probably in the 6th century. People believe he might have visited the area where the church now stands.

A Look Inside the Church

The oldest part of the church is the chancel, which is the area around the altar. It was built around 1450. Some parts of the main church area, called the nave, might even be older.

Above the south doorway, there is an old painting, or mural, of a person named David. This painting was made during the time of the Protestant Reformation. The font, which is used for baptisms, is from the 15th century. The pulpit, where sermons are given, was made in the 17th century.

The Church Tower and Bells

The church has a tall tower that was built in the early 1700s. Inside the tower, there is a set of eight bells. When these bells are rung together, it's called a "peel."

The Church Community

The Church of St Petrock is part of a larger group of churches. This group is called a benefice. It includes churches in nearby villages like Dunster and Withycombe. They all work together within the Exmoor area.
