Saint Saviour's Church is a church located in The Meadows, Nottingham, England. It is part of the Church of England. This building is very important because it is a Grade II listed building. This means it has special historical or architectural value.

History of the Church

The area around Saint Saviour's Church is called a parish. This parish was created from a larger one that belonged to St. Mary's Church, Nottingham.

Building the Church

The first stone for the church was laid on 28 September 1863. This important event was done by Bishop John Jackson. He was the Bishop of Lincoln at that time.

The main part of the church, called the nave, opened for worship in 1864. A local architect named Richard Charles Sutton designed it. The money for building it came from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. These were people who managed church property and funds.

The new church was needed because the old small chapel in The Meadows was too small. More people were moving to the area, and they needed a bigger place to worship.

Church Design

The church has a long main area called the nave. It is 74 feet long and 24 feet wide. On each side of the nave are aisles, which are 74 feet long and 17 feet wide.

At the east end of the church is the chancel. This is where the altar is usually located. The chancel is 30 feet deep and 24 feet wide. The highest point of the nave ceiling is 46 feet. The church was designed to hold about 750 people.

Building the church cost around £3,000 in 1863. A local builder named John Barker, from Arkwright Street, did the construction. A house for the vicar, called the vicarage, was added in 1867. It was designed by Frederick Bakewell.

In 1913, the east end of the church was updated. This work was done by another local architect, Thomas Wright. The church is located on Arkwright Walk.

Saint Saviour's Today

Worship services are held every week at 4:30 PM. The church also works closely with the local Salvation Army church. They often hold joint worship services together on Sundays.

In 2013, the main church building was renovated. This renovation created space for a fun indoor softplay centre and a café. This centre is called Eden Softplay. It is open seven days a week and is a popular place for children and families to visit.
