A Look Back: St Silas Church History

When Was St Silas Church Built?

St Silas Church got its name from Saint Silas. It was built in 1867. The first person to lead the church as its vicar was Charles Sisum Wright. The church was officially ready for use in 1869.

A Protected Building

On July 28, 1973, St Silas Church was given a special status. It became a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.

The Church Closes Its Doors

After serving for 133 years, St Silas Church closed on December 1, 2000.

New Plans for the Old Church

In 2006, the YMCA bought the church. They wanted to turn it into a local medical center and offices. The house next door, where the vicar used to live, was planned to be a car park. But these plans never happened.

Later, in 2014, a company called Claypenny Properties got permission. They were allowed to change part of the church building into flats for students.

The church was built during the Victorian era. This was a time when a style called Gothic revival was very popular. This style used masonry, which means it was built with stone or brick.

Special Windows and Memories

The church has a large stained glass window on its northern side. It shows four stories from the Bible and three archangels. There are other stained glass windows too. They all match the beautiful style of the main one.

Inside the church, you can still find some important items. There is a special plaque that remembers those who died in the First World War. The original altar, which is a table used in church services, is also still there.
