The Church's Story

Building and Early Days

St Silas Church was named after Saint Silas, an important figure in the Bible. Construction on the church finished in 1867. The first leader of the church was a person named Charles Sisum Wright. The church was officially ready for services in 1869.

Becoming a Special Building

On July 28, 1973, St Silas Church was given a special status. It became a Grade II listed building. This means it is an important historical building that needs to be protected.

Closing and New Uses

After serving the community for 133 years, the church closed on December 1, 2000. In 2006, the YMCA bought the church. They hoped to turn it into a medical center and offices. However, this plan did not happen.

In 2014, a company called Claypenny Properties got permission. They were allowed to change part of the church building. It was turned into apartments for students. Today, the church building is still used as student housing. The original altar, a special part of the church, is still there.

Church Design and Features

The church was built during the Victorian era. This was a time when a style called Gothic Revival was very popular. This style uses elements from old Gothic cathedrals, like pointed arches and tall windows.

One of the church's cool features is a large stained glass window. It is on the northern side of the church tower. This window has four panels that show stories from the Bible. It also shows three archangels, who are important angels. There are other stained glass windows around the church too. They are made in a style similar to the main one.

Inside the church, you can still find some original items. There is a special plaque that remembers people who died in the First World War. The original altar, where services were held, is also still present.
