The Church of St Teilo is a historic church located in Llantilio Crossenny, a village in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is known for being a very grand church. The building has a special shape called "cruciform," which means it looks like a cross from above.

The church features an Early English style tower. Its main part, called the chancel, is built in the Decorated style. Because of its importance and beauty, the church was given a special status as a Grade I listed building on November 19, 1953. This means it's a very important historical building. The church is named after Saint Teilo.

History and Design of the Church

Llantilio Crossenny was an important area for the Bishops of Llandaff during the Middle Ages. You can still see where their old manor house, Hen Gwrt, once stood. The presence of these bishops and the nearby White Castle helped make the church so large and impressive.

Building Materials and Style

The church is built from Old Red Sandstone. It has a tall, noticeable spire covered with shingles. The tower and the main part of the church, called the nave, were built in the 13th century. The chancel, which is the area around the altar, was rebuilt in the 14th century. The shingled spire was added much later, in the early 18th century.

Restoration Work

The entire church was carefully restored between 1856 and 1857. This work was done by two famous architects, John Prichard and John Pollard Seddon. They helped preserve the church's historical features.

Inside the Church

The inside of the Church of St Teilo is considered "outstanding" by experts. Near the East window of the chapel, there are two stone supports called corbels. Some people believe these corbels look like Edward II, a king of England. The church also has many beautiful funeral monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. You can also see lovely stained glass windows created by the artist Charles Eamer Kempe.

The Church Today

The main priest in charge of the Church of St Teilo is the Reverend Heidi Prince. She has served the parish for many years.

The church holds services regularly. These services happen on the first and third Sunday of each month. They also have special services for important Christian holidays. You can find more details about these services on the parish's official website.
