This church is so important and beautiful that it's been given a "Grade I listed" status. This means the government thinks it's a really amazing building with a lot of history and special design, worth protecting for everyone to see.

Discovering St. Wilfrid's Church History

This church is very old, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was carefully repaired and updated in 1906 and 1907 to keep it in good condition.

How a Flood Changed the Area

Around the year 1600, a big flood happened. The River Trent changed its path because of this flood. This change caused the village of North Muskham to be separated from a nearby small settlement called Holme.

The Barton Family's Impact

At that time, a rich family called the Barton family lived in Holme. Sir Thomas Barton, who was part of this family, owned a large house and a lot of land. Because of his wealth, St. Wilfrid's Church in North Muskham received many benefits. You can still see the Barton family's special coat of arms in different parts of the church. This coat of arms includes a "rebus," which is like a picture puzzle using images to represent a name. For the Bartons, it shows a bear and a barrel (called a "tun").

Exploring the Church's Design

The oldest parts of St. Wilfrid's Church are the lower section of its tower and the north arcade. An arcade is a row of arches supported by columns. The columns in the north arcade are eight-sided, and they might be the oldest of this type in Nottinghamshire.

Comparing Church Styles

The columns in the south arcade are from a later style called "Perpendicular." They look similar to the columns found in St Mary's, Nottingham. The main part of the church, called the nave, has a "clerestory." This is a row of windows high up on the walls, letting in more light. The nave also has an old wooden roof from the same time period.

Inside the Church

The chancel, which is the area around the altar, is very impressive. It has a large window at the east end with five sections for glass. The pulpit, where sermons are given, was likely built in the late 1600s. The altar rails, which separate the altar from the rest of the church, might be from the same time. A famous expert named Nikolaus Pevsner described the church's screen as having "exceptionally fully cusped" designs. This means it has many decorative points or curves.
