Stadskanaal is a town and a municipality in the Netherlands. It is located in the northeast part of the country, in the province of Groningen. About 32,715 people live there. The town gets its name from the Stadskanaal canal, which runs through it.
Long ago, from 1800 to 1900, this area was perfect for digging up peat. Peat is a type of soil made from old plants, used as fuel. The canal was built to help ship all this peat to Groningen, which is the main city of the province.
In the local Gronings dialect, people call the town "Knoal". The people who live there are known as "Knoalsters".
