Stan M. Herman (born September 17, 1928) is a famous American fashion designer. He is well-known for creating stylish uniforms for many big companies. He also led the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for many years. This is a very important group for fashion designers.

Early Life and Education
Stanley M. Herman was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Passaic, New Jersey. His father owned shops that sold silk. Stan went to Passaic High School.
After high school, he studied at the University of Cincinnati. He graduated in 1950. He then went to the Traphagen School of Fashion. There, he learned about costume design and graduated in 1952. After his studies, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
Starting His Fashion Career
After the war, Stan Herman moved to New York City. His first job in fashion design did not last long. So, he worked in Broadway theatre at night. During the day, he designed clothes part-time.
He soon launched his first clothing collection. It was a big success! A fashion newspaper called Women's Wear Daily praised his work. After this, he decided to focus on fashion full-time. He became the main designer for a company called Mr. Mort. This company made "ready-to-wear" clothes. These are clothes made in standard sizes, ready to be bought and worn.
Designing for Big Companies
Stan Herman designed his first uniform for the Avis car rental company. Since then, he has designed uniforms for many famous businesses. You might have seen his designs without even knowing it!
He has created uniforms for:

Leading the Fashion World
Stan Herman was the president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). He held this important role from 1991 to 2006. The CFDA helps fashion designers and promotes American fashion.
In 1993, he helped create New York Fashion Week. This is a big event where designers show their new collections. He worked with Fern Mallis to organize it. They set up white tents in Bryant Park for the shows. They called it "7th on Sixth." This made New York Fashion Week a major event in the fashion world.
Since 1993, Stan Herman has also designed a collection of loungewear and sleepwear for QVC. QVC is a shopping channel where people can buy products from home.
Awards and Recognition
Stan Herman has won several important awards for his work.
- He won three Coty Awards between 1969 and 1974. These awards were very prestigious in American fashion.
- In 2006, the CFDA gave him the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors designers who have made a huge impact on fashion throughout their careers.
- In 2008, his old university, the University of Cincinnati, gave him an honorary doctorate. This is a special degree that recognizes his achievements.
