Discovering Standard's Past

How Standard Got Its Name

The story of Standard began in 1905. A company called B.F. Berry Coal Company wanted to open a new mine. They hired a man named John Cherry to help dig the mine.

To support the mine, a new railroad was built. It connected Granville and Oglesby. At first, the village was called Berry. This was in honor of the coal company.

In 1908, the name changed to Taft. But there was another town named Taft, which caused confusion. So, in 1914, the village was renamed Standard.

Life in the Early Village

When the mine first opened, the village was very simple. It had only two large boarding houses. These were places where miners could live.

Later, the company built more houses. These were for miners who had families. The mine was very important to the village. However, it closed down in 1924.
