Stanley Fred Battle (born June 12, 1951) is an American educator and author. He is known for being a leader at several universities. These include Coppin State University and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Mr. Battle also worked as a civic activist, meaning he worked to improve society. Today, he is a professor of social work at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut. He also directs their Master of Social Work program.

Early Life and Education

Stanley Battle grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. He earned four different college degrees. In 1973, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Springfield College. He then earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Connecticut in 1975. Later, in 1979 and 1980, he earned a Master of Public Health and a Doctorate in social welfare policy from the University of Pittsburgh. He also completed special leadership programs at Harvard University and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Stanley Battle's Career in Education

Mr. Battle's career in teaching and leading universities lasted over 30 years. He started in 1980 as a professor at the University of Minnesota School of Social Work. After that, he worked at many different colleges. These included Boston University, the University of Connecticut, and Eastern Connecticut State University. From 2000 to 2003, he was a vice chancellor at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. In this role, he helped students and promoted diversity.

Leading Coppin State University

On March 3, 2003, Stanley Battle became the fourth president of Coppin State College. This college is located in Baltimore, Maryland. As president, Mr. Battle focused on three main goals. These were improving academics, upgrading campus buildings, and building stronger relationships outside the university.

Under his leadership, Coppin State College became Coppin State University in 2004. This meant it gained university status. During his time, the university received more money from the state. It also became the first campus in the University System of Maryland to have wireless internet everywhere. Mr. Battle also helped create the Urban Educational Corridor. This program connected the university with local elementary, middle, and high schools. He also helped the university manage a struggling public school. This school improved greatly under his guidance. In 2005, he started The Coppin Academy. This was a high school on campus for 400 students. It received funding from the Gates Foundation and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

In November 2006, Mr. Battle was chosen to be the new chancellor of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. This university is in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Leading North Carolina A&T University

Stanley Battle started his role as chancellor of North Carolina A&T on July 1, 2007. He was officially installed as the 11th chancellor in April 2008. His main goal was to make the university's academic programs even better. He also wanted to prepare students to succeed anywhere in the world.

During his time, the university achieved many great things. In 2008, its College of Engineering was ranked among the top 25 in the country. The pass rate for students in the School of Nursing went from 66% to 91%. This led to the nursing program getting full accreditation. North Carolina A&T also became the only Historically Black University to have a Wall Street trading room. This is a special room where students can learn about stock trading.

The university also received a major grant from the National Science Foundation. This was an $18 million grant for an Engineering Research Center. It was the first time a Historically Black University received such a grant.

Mr. Battle also started the Dowdy Scholarship program. This scholarship helps excellent students with high grades attend the university. He also created The Cosby Kids initiative. This program worked with younger students in 4th, 6th, and 8th grades. It helped them prepare for college by focusing on math, reading, and science. In February 2009, Mr. Battle announced he would leave North Carolina A&T. He left on June 30, 2009, for personal and family reasons.

Interim President at Southern Connecticut State University

On April 1, 2010, Stanley Battle was appointed as the interim president of Southern Connecticut State University. He started this role in May 2010. As interim president, he helped with important projects. These included renovating and building two large facilities on the New Haven campus. He also hired three new deans to make the academic programs stronger. He helped raise $1.4 million for the university. Mr. Battle also started the Southern Academy. This program helped rising 4th graders prepare for college.

In late 2011, Mr. Battle decided not to seek the permanent president position. He wanted to explore other opportunities. In April 2012, he joined the faculty at Central Connecticut State University as a professor of social work.

Present Day Work

Mr. Battle taught at Central Connecticut State University from 2012 to 2013. In August 2013, he was appointed as a professor of social work. He also became the first director of the master's degree program in social work at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut. He continues to serve in these roles today.

Stanley Battle is married to Judith Lynn Rozie-Battle. She also has several college degrees. She earned a law degree from the University of Minnesota. She also has a master's degree from the School of Social Work at the University of Connecticut. Her bachelor's degree is from the University of New Haven.
