Before 2023, Stanley was managed in a few different ways. Part of it was the village of Stanley. Another part was the rural community of Upper Miramichi. There was also a local service district. These areas worked with different regional groups to manage things.

Why is it Called Stanley?
This area is named after the settlement of Stanley. The settlement itself was named after Lord Stanley. He was an important government official at the time. Lord Stanley helped a company called the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Land Company. This company encouraged people to move to and settle in the area.
A Brief History of Stanley
Stanley has been created and recreated a few times.
- 1837: The first version of Stanley was set up. It was formed from parts of Douglas and Saint Marys areas.
- 1838: Stanley was then officially closed down.
- 1847: The Stanley we know today was created again. It was formed from Douglas and Saint Marys areas. This new Stanley was much bigger, covering the northern part of the county.
