Stanley Street first opened in 1845. It was named after a famous person from that time. This person was Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby. He lived from 1799 to 1869. At the time, he was the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. This was an important job in the British government. Later, he even became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The name for Stanley Street was chosen by two people: James Smith and Duncan Fisher. They officially named the street on August 23, 1845.

Another important person connected to the street's name was Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby. He was the second son of Edward Smith-Stanley.
