A Look Back at Star's History
Star was started in the mid-1880s by a person named Alec Street. He named the community after a nearby hill called Star Mountain. Alec Street also owned a store and a gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers).
The first post office opened in 1886. Calvin Skinner was the first postmaster. By 1890, the first public road connected Star to Goldthwaite. A few years later, in 1895, Star had several businesses. These included a saloon, grocery stores, and a drug store.
Challenges and Growth
Star faced a big challenge on May 5, 1904, when a tornado hit. Two people died, and five homes were completely destroyed. But the community worked hard to rebuild. In 1905, a permanent church was built. A bank opened in 1910.
A new stone school building with four rooms was finished in 1913. Another bad storm, a hailstorm, damaged homes, businesses, and the school on April 22, 1924.
In 1928, Star's bank was robbed. The robber got away with about $3,000 and other valuable items. During the Great Depression a few years later, the bank was sold.
By 1939, Star had eight businesses. That same year, three smaller schools nearby joined with Star's school. In 1940, the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) built a new school for the Star Independent School District. This school was designed by Wyatt C. Hedrick. It was the only school built by the W.P.A. in Mills County.
In the mid-1940s, about 170 people lived in Star. As more people started using cars, fewer local businesses were needed. By 1980, the population was about 85 people. It stayed around that number until 2000. In 2010, the population grew to 110.
Even though Star doesn't have its own city government, it still has a post office. Its zip code is 76880.
