History of Star Junction
Star Junction was started in 1893. This happened when the Washington Coal and Coke Company opened a mine called Washington No. 2. The community got its name because it used to be a railroad depot. This was the end of the line for the Washington Run Railroad.
Star Junction was once a big center for coal mining. They had special ovens called beehive ovens to make coke, which is a type of fuel. There was also a foundry where metal was melted and shaped.
The area saw some worker protests, including a large walkout in 1922. About 4,500 miners stopped working. Even though the company store and mines are gone now, the "patch" still remains. A "patch" is a group of houses built by the company for its workers. Many people still live in these old company houses. Star Junction is special because it shows what a typical coal town was like. It has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site.
