The State of Georgia Building, also known as 2 Peachtree Street, is a very tall building in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.. It has 44 floors and stands about 566 feet (172.5 meters) high. This impressive skyscraper was finished in 1966.

A Tall Building in Atlanta's History
When it was built in 1966, the State of Georgia Building was the tallest building in the entire Southeast region of the United States. It held the title of Atlanta's tallest building for ten years. In 1976, another famous building, the Westin Peachtree Plaza, became even taller.
Where the Building Stands Today
The State of Georgia Building was constructed on a special spot. Before it, there was a covered shopping area called the Peachtree Arcade. This arcade was built in 1917 and connected two important streets: Peachtree Street and Broad Street.
From Bank to Government Offices
This building was first made to be the main office, or headquarters, for a bank called First National Bank of Atlanta. This bank was also known as First Atlanta. Their old main office building, built in 1905, was right next door. Part of that old building is still there today and is used by Georgia State's Andrew Young School of Policy Studies.
Who Designed This Skyscraper?
The State of Georgia Building was designed by a team of architects. An Atlanta company called FABRAP worked together with a New York company named Emery Roth & Sons. They created the plans for this large building.
How the Building Changed Owners
Over time, the First Atlanta bank joined with another bank called Wachovia Bank. This happened in 1985. For a few years, First Atlanta still operated under its own name. But in 1991, new banking rules allowed the banks to fully combine. First Atlanta then officially became part of Wachovia Bank of Georgia.
Soon after, Wachovia moved its Georgia offices to a different building called 191 Peachtree. This left the 2 Peachtree Street building empty. The state of Georgia then bought the building. Today, it is used for many different government offices.
