Steed Claude Malbranque, born on January 6, 1980, is a former professional footballer. He was born in Belgium but played for France's national youth teams.
Malbranque started his professional journey with Lyon in France. In 2001, he moved to England, where he played for Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, and Sunderland. He returned to France in 2011 for a short time with Saint-Étienne. In 2012, he joined Lyon again.
He was known for playing as a winger or an attacking midfielder. During his second time at Lyon, he also played as a central midfielder.

Steed Malbranque's Club Career
Starting at Lyon: Youth and Early Days
Steed Malbranque trained at the Lyon youth academy from 1995 to 1997. During this time, he won the Under-15 championship twice. He also won the Under-17 Cup and the reserve team championship. Malbranque was even the captain of the French Under-18 team.
He played his first professional game for Lyon on February 21, 1998, when he was 18. It was a 1–1 draw against Montpellier. He played a total of 96 games for Lyon. This included 12 games and two goals in the Champions League. He also played seven games in the UEFA Cup.
In 2001, Lyon won the French Coupe de la Ligue. Malbranque was a substitute in the final game but did not play. He had a chance to join the English club Arsenal after playing well against them in a Champions League match. He decided not to move because he felt he was not ready for the Premier League.
Playing for Fulham: A Fan Favorite

Malbranque eventually moved to the Premier League in 2001. He joined Fulham for about £4.5 million. His first game for Fulham was a 3–2 loss against Manchester United at Old Trafford. He scored 10 goals in his first season.
He became a very popular player during his five years at Fulham. He played 211 games and scored 44 goals. This included six games and three goals in Fulham's short UEFA Cup journey in the 2002–03 season. He was Fulham's top scorer that season with 13 goals. These goals helped Fulham avoid being moved down to a lower league.
In October 2003, Malbranque scored in Fulham's 3–1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. He signed a new four-year contract with Fulham that same month. On May 13, 2006, Malbranque decided to leave Fulham. He joined Tottenham Hotspur on August 31 for about £2 million.
Time at Tottenham Hotspur: Work Ethic and Cup Win
Malbranque played his first game for Tottenham Hotspur on November 8, 2006. It was a 3–1 League Cup win against Port Vale. He had a small operation that kept him from playing earlier.
He scored his first goal for Spurs on December 9 in a big 5–1 win against Charlton Athletic. Fans loved Malbranque at Tottenham because he worked very hard. In the 2007–08 season, he was among the top players in the Premier League for tackles made. This showed how much he worked and how good he was at tackling.
Malbranque scored Tottenham's 150th goal in European competitions on March 14, 2007. This was in a UEFA Cup game against Sporting Braga. He started for Spurs when they won the 2008 Football League Cup Final against Chelsea.

Malbranque joined Sunderland on July 30, 2008, signing a four-year contract. He scored his first goal for Sunderland in a 4–1 win against Hull City.
He played his best football for Sunderland during the 2009–10 season. He was very effective playing on the left side of the field. He scored his second Sunderland goal in an FA Cup win against Barrow. His good play helped Sunderland move up the league table.
Malbranque stayed at Sunderland for the 2010–11 season. He played more in the middle of the field. He was part of Sunderland's early seven-game unbeaten run. This included games against big teams like Manchester City and Manchester United. On February 1, 2011, he played his 100th game for Sunderland.
Fans liked Malbranque during his time at Sunderland. In the summer of 2011, it was announced that he was talking about joining the French team Saint-Étienne. His manager at Sunderland said he was no longer needed.
Short Time at Saint-Étienne
On August 3, 2011, Malbranque signed a two-year contract with the French team AS Saint-Étienne. This ended his 10 years of playing football in England.
A month after he joined, there were false stories that Malbranque wanted to leave because his son was ill. Malbranque released a statement saying these stories were completely untrue. He said he did not have a son and his family was healthy. The next day, Saint-Étienne and Malbranque agreed to end his contract.
Returning to Lyon: Second Spell
On August 2, 2012, Malbranque's first club, Lyon, confirmed he was training with them. On August 25, 2012, Malbranque signed a one-year contract with Lyon.
In his first game back at Lyon, Malbranque played very well. He helped his team win 3–2 against Valenciennes. He continued to play well, helping his teammates score goals. On November 4, he scored a penalty himself in a 5–2 win for Lyon against Bastia. In December 2012, Malbranque signed a new contract to stay with Lyon until 2014.
Later Career: Caen and Amateur Leagues
On June 17, 2016, Malbranque signed a one-year contract with Caen. He joined them as a free agent.
In November 2017, he came out of retirement to play for Chasselay MDA. This team plays in a lower league called the Championnat National 2. On September 4, 2020, he joined Limonest in the Championnat National 3.
International Football Career
Steed Malbranque was born in Belgium to French parents. He was called up to play for the French Under-21s. He was part of the team that lost to the Czech Republic in the final of the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship.
In February 2004, Malbranque showed interest in playing for the Belgium national team. This was because he had not yet played for France's senior team. However, Belgium's coach said Malbranque was not eligible to play for Belgium. A month later, Malbranque was called to the senior France squad for a friendly game. But he did not play in the match.
In November 2012, Malbranque was called up to the French squad again for a friendly against Italy. However, he still did not get to play his first game for the national team.
