How Steele Lake Got Its Name
Steele Lake is named after Ira John Steele. He was a soldier who sadly died during World War I.
Before being called Steele Lake, it had a different name: Cross Lake. It was named this because of its unique shape, which looked like a cross. This old name was also used for the nearby Cross Lake Provincial Park.
Water Flow and Connections
Even though Steele Lake is not very big, it collects water from a large area around it. This area is called its drainage basin.
Water flows into Steele Lake from smaller places. These include September Lake, Frances Lake, Banana Lake, and other small ponds and streams. All this water eventually flows into the Athabasca River system. From there, it travels a long way until it reaches the Arctic Ocean!
