Steep Hill Brook is a small stream, also called a tributary, that flows into Six Mile Run. You can find it in Franklin Park, Somerset County, New Jersey, in the United States.

Where Steep Hill Brook Starts and Flows

Steep Hill Brook begins its journey in a pond. This pond is located near where Amwell Road and Van Cleef Road meet. It's right on Scott Farm, a local farm in the area.

From its start, the brook flows south. It enters a special protected area called the Six Mile Run Reservoir Site. This area helps keep the land and water around Six Mile Run safe. The brook then crosses Blackwells Mills Road. Finally, it empties into Six Mile Run.

How to Visit Steep Hill Brook

Steep Hill Brook is a fairly short stream. It only crosses one main road, Blackwells Mills Road. This makes it easy to see the brook from one side of the road. You can also find trails in the nearby woods that lead to the brook. These trails offer another way to explore the area around the stream.

Animals Living in Steep Hill Brook

Steep Hill Brook is home to many different animals. You can find lots of fish here. They like the water because it has plenty of oxygen. This makes it a good place for them to live and swim.

In the slower parts of the brook, you might spot several frogs. Even though the bottom of the stream is mostly fine gravel, which isn't ideal for frogs, they still manage to find places to live.

What the Streambed Looks Like

The bottom of Steep Hill Brook is mostly made of fine, reddish gravel. In some spots, you might see small cliffs made of shale rock along the banks. The water in this stream usually flows at a medium-fast speed. It's also quite shallow in most places.

You'll often see "sandbars" in the brook. These are actually small piles of gravel that have built up over time. If you look closely near the bridge at Blackwells Mills Road, you might even find tiny stalactites growing. These are like small, hanging icicles made of rock.
