His Early Life

Stelios Perpiniadis was born on the Greek island of Tinos in 1899. He was the youngest of eleven children. When he was very young, his family moved to Alexandria in Egypt in 1900. Later, in 1906, they moved to Constantinople (now Istanbul).

In 1919, Stelios joined the Greek army. He served during a time when the army was in Smyrna. In 1922, his family had to leave Asia Minor. They moved back to Greece because of a big event called the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

In 1923, Stelios Perpiniadis settled in Piraeus, Greece. This city was a hub for musicians, especially those who played rebetiko music. Many of these musicians had also come from Asia Minor.

A musician named Manolis Margaronis encouraged Stelios to start performing. So, in 1925, Stelios Perpiniadis began his music career. He quickly became known for his unique style.

Rebetiko is a type of Greek urban folk music. It started in the early 20th century. This music often tells stories about everyday life. It talks about joys, sorrows, and challenges. Rebetiko songs are usually played with instruments like the bouzouki, baglamas, and guitar.
