Stella Hackel Sims, born on December 27, 1926, is an American lawyer and politician. She is known for being the 32nd person to lead the United States Mint. She held this important role from 1977 to 1981. Before that, she served as the Treasurer for the state of Vermont.

Early Life and Education
Stella Bloomberg was born in 1926 in Burlington, Vermont. She went to the University of Vermont and finished her studies there in 1945. Later, she studied law at the Boston University School of Law, earning her law degree (called a Juris Doctor) in 1948.
Stella Hackel Sims' Career in Public Service
In 1957, Stella Hackel Sims began her career in public service. She was elected as a grand juror, which is like a city prosecutor, in Rutland, Vermont. She held this position for six years, until 1963.
From 1963 to 1973, she worked as the Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Employment Security. This department helps people find jobs and provides support. During 1971 and 1972, she was also the president of a group called the Interstate Conference of Employment Security Agencies.
Serving as Vermont State Treasurer
In 1974, Stella Hackel Sims was chosen by the Democratic Party to run for Vermont State Treasurer. She won the election and served one term, from 1975 to 1977. As Treasurer, she managed the state's money.
In 1976, she ran for governor of Vermont but did not win. After her term as Treasurer ended, she returned to Rutland to work as the city attorney.
Leading the United States Mint
In 1977, President Jimmy Carter asked Stella Hackel Sims to become the director of the United States Mint. This is a very important job, as the Mint is responsible for making all the coins for the United States. She served in this role from November 1977 to April 1981.
During her time as director, she oversaw the creation of the Susan B. Anthony dollar coin in 1979. This coin was special because it featured a real woman, Susan B. Anthony, who fought for women's rights.
Personal Life
In 1949, Stella married Donald H. Hackel. After he passed away in 1985, she married Dr. Arthur I. Sims and became known as Stella Hackel Sims. Arthur Sims passed away in 2006. Stella Hackel Sims retired in 1988. She has lived in Arlington, Virginia and Naples, Florida.
