Stephan Andersen's Club Career
Starting Out in Denmark
Stephan Andersen began his football journey in the youth teams of Hvidovre IF. Later, he moved to the youth setup of Brøndby IF, a very successful Danish club. When it seemed he might not become Brøndby's main goalkeeper, he returned to Hvidovre in 1999.
Andersen played his first senior game for Hvidovre IF in the Danish 1st Division. People quickly saw that he was a very talented young player.
Playing for AB
In March 2002, the owner of Hvidovre, Peter Schmeichel, decided to leave the club. Hvidovre wanted to let Andersen go, as he was one of only two professional players there. Several English clubs, including Aston Villa and Sunderland, were interested in him.
However, Sunderland decided to sign another goalkeeper, Thomas Myhre, instead. No other foreign offers came through for Andersen at that time. So, in August 2002, Andersen moved to Akademisk Boldklub (AB), a team in Denmark's top league, the Danish Superliga.
Time at Charlton Athletic
In June 2004, Stephan moved to England to join Charlton Athletic. This move cost about 8 million Danish kroner. In his first year with the London club, he only played in two first-team games.
At the start of the 2005–06 season, Andersen became the main goalkeeper because the usual starter, Dean Kiely, was injured. Later in the season, Charlton's performance wasn't great, so Andersen was replaced by Kiely, and then by Thomas Myhre. Myhre became the main goalkeeper as Charlton started playing better. Andersen was put back in the team for the last two games of the season when Myhre got injured.
In the summer of 2006, Andersen almost joined Leeds United for a short time. But Charlton wanted to be able to call him back at any point, and the deal didn't happen. In the first half of the 2006–07 season, another goalkeeper, Scott Carson, became Charlton's starting player.
Return to Brøndby IF
In November 2006, Andersen signed a deal to move back to Denmark. He joined Brøndby IF, a Superliga team, in January 2007. When he first started at the club, he made a few mistakes in games. However, he stayed in the starting team and soon started playing much better.
He helped Brøndby win the 2008 Danish Cup in 2008. Because of his great performance, he was named the 2008 Danish Goalkeeper of the Year.
Later Career and Retirement
In August 2011, Stephan joined Évian in France's top league, Ligue 1. He moved for about 2 million Danish kroner. In the summer of 2013, he signed a two-year contract with Real Betis in Spain's La Liga.
On January 30, 2014, he was sent to play for Go Ahead Eagles in the Dutch Eredivisie for the rest of the 2013–14 season. On May 19, 2014, it was announced that he would return to Denmark permanently. He signed a three-year contract with FC Copenhagen, who are the main rivals of his old club, Brøndby. On June 17, 2021, Copenhagen confirmed that he had left the club.
On September 12, 2021, Andersen joined the Danish amateur club VB 1968. He played for them until 2023.
Stephan Andersen's International Career
Playing for Denmark's Youth Teams
Stephan Andersen was first called up to the Denmark under-21 national team in June 2001. He quickly became the main goalkeeper, taking the place of Rune Pedersen, who was two years older. While playing for AB, Andersen played 21 games for the Danish under-21 national team. He was the first goalkeeper to win a Danish talent award, being named the 2003 Danish under-21 Talent of the Year.
Playing for the Senior National Team
After playing very well for AB, Andersen made his first game for the senior Danish national team against Spain in a friendly match in March 2004. It took four and a half years before he played his second game for the national team.
He was chosen as a backup goalkeeper for the Denmark national team for the 2004 European Championship. In that tournament, Thomas Sørensen was the main goalkeeper for every game. While playing for Brøndby, Andersen played his second game for Denmark in September 2008. He took the place of the injured Thomas Sørensen for three games during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification.
Andersen was part of the Denmark national team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament. When Thomas Sørensen was injured and couldn't play in UEFA Euro 2012, Andersen became the main goalkeeper for the Danish national team.
