Stephan Andersen's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Stephan Andersen began his football journey in the youth teams of Hvidovre IF. Later, he moved to the youth setup of Brøndby IF, a well-known Danish club.
However, Brøndby decided he wasn't their long-term goalkeeper. So, in 1999, he went back to Hvidovre IF. He made his first senior appearance for Hvidovre in the Danish 1st Division. People quickly saw him as a very promising talent.
Playing for AB
In March 2002, the owner of Hvidovre, Peter Schmeichel, left the club. Hvidovre then wanted to sell Stephan Andersen, who was one of their main players.
Several English clubs, like Aston Villa and Sunderland, were interested in him. But Sunderland chose another goalkeeper. So, in August 2002, Stephan moved to Akademisk Boldklub (AB). This club played in the top Danish league, the Danish Superliga.
Time at Charlton Athletic
In June 2004, Stephan moved to England to join Charlton Athletic. The transfer cost about 8 million Danish kroner. In his first year, he only played in two main team games.
He started the 2005–06 season as the main goalkeeper because Dean Kiely was injured. But later, he was replaced by other goalkeepers. In the summer of 2006, he almost joined Leeds United on loan. However, the deal didn't happen because Charlton wanted to be able to call him back anytime.
Returning to Denmark with Brøndby IF
In November 2006, Stephan decided to return to Denmark. He signed a deal to play for Brøndby IF starting in January 2007. At first, he made some mistakes in games. But he kept his spot and improved his play.
He helped Brøndby win the 2008 Danish Cup in 2008. That same year, he was named the Danish Goalkeeper of the Year. This was a big achievement for him.
Later Club Career
In August 2011, Stephan joined Évian in France. He played in the French Ligue 1. In the summer of 2013, he signed a two-year contract with Real Betis in Spain's La Liga.
He was then loaned to Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands in January 2014. On May 19, 2014, it was announced he would return to Denmark for good. He signed a three-year contract with FC Copenhagen, a big rival of his former club Brøndby. Stephan left FC Copenhagen on June 17, 2021.
On September 12, 2021, Stephan Andersen joined the Danish amateur club VB 1968.
Playing for Denmark

Stephan was first called up to the Denmark under-21 national team in June 2001. He quickly became their main goalkeeper. He played 21 games for the under-21 team. In 2003, he became the first goalkeeper to win a Danish talent award, being named the Danish Under-21 Talent of the Year.
After playing well for AB, Stephan made his debut for the senior Danish national team in March 2004. This was in a friendly game against Spain. It took four and a half years before he played his second game for the national team.
He was a backup goalkeeper for Denmark at the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament. The main goalkeeper was Thomas Sørensen. In September 2008, Stephan got his second chance to play for Denmark. He replaced an injured Thomas Sørensen for three games during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification. He was also part of the Danish team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament.
When Thomas Sørensen was injured and couldn't play in UEFA Euro 2012, Stephan Andersen became the first-choice goalkeeper for Denmark.
