Stephen Elliott (born Elliott Pershing Stitzel, November 27, 1918 – May 21, 2005) was an American actor. He was famous for playing Burt Johnson in the 1981 movie Arthur. He also played Chief Hubbard in the 1984 hit movie Beverly Hills Cop.

Stephen Elliott's Acting Career

Theatre Work

Stephen Elliott started his acting journey by studying with Sanford Meisner. This was in New York from 1940 to 1942. After serving in World War II with the United States Merchant Marine, he began acting on Broadway. His first role was in Shakespeare's play The Tempest.

He later became one of the first members of Actors Studio. This was a famous acting school. In 1967, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in Marat/Sade. Two years later, he won the Drama Desk Award for his work in A Whistle in the Dark. He also performed in other well-known Broadway plays. These included King Lear and The Crucible.

Television Roles

Stephen Elliott appeared in many TV shows. He played Douglas Channing in Falcon Crest. He was also General Padget in Columbo. In Dallas, he played a rich lawyer named Scotty Demarest. He also appeared in Chicago Hope as Judge Harold Aldrich.

In 1981, he had a small role as William Randolph Hearst in a TV series. This series was called Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years. He also appeared in two episodes of Highway To Heaven in 1985. He worked alongside Helen Hunt and Michael Landon in these episodes.

Radio Work

In 1981, Stephen Elliott also acted on the radio. He played Bail Organa in the Star Wars radio drama. Bail Organa is the father of Princess Leia in the Star Wars story.

Stephen Elliott's Personal Life

Stephen Elliott was born in New York City. His birth name was Elliott Pershing Stitzel. He married Nancy Chase in 1947. They later divorced in 1960. They had two children together, Jency and Jon.

In 1980, he married his third wife, actress Alice Hirson. They first met on Broadway in 1964. Alice Hirson also appeared in the TV series Dallas. However, her character never met Stephen Elliott's character on the show.

Stephen Elliott passed away in 2005. He died in Woodland Hills, California, due to heart problems.
