Early Life and Education
Stephen Moore was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father was Stephen Moore, 2nd Earl Mount Cashell, and his mother was Margaret King. His mother had interesting ideas about how to raise children, which she learned from her teacher, Mary Wollstonecraft. Stephen went to Trinity College, Cambridge, a famous university in England.
Life in Europe
Stephen Moore spent some time living in Switzerland. In 1819, he married Anna Marie Wyse/Wyss from Berne. They then lived in Frankfurt, Germany, for a while. Together, they had seven children: four daughters and three sons.
In 1826, he was chosen to be an Irish Representative Peer. This meant he could have a seat in the House of Lords, which is part of the British Parliament.
Moving to Canada
In 1833, Stephen Moore and his family left Europe. They moved to British North America, which is now Canada. They settled in a place called Lobo Township, near London, in what was then Upper Canada (now Middlesex County, Ontario).
Lord Mount Cashell bought a large piece of land, about 1,000 acres (4 square kilometers). This land used to belong to Captain John Matthews. On this land, Mount Cashell built a big house for his family and their helpers.
Life in Canada West
While living in Canada (which later became Canada West and then Ontario), Stephen Moore sometimes had disagreements with local officials. He believed his rights as an Irish Peer should be respected. People in the area used to tell stories about him. One story says he would use a pistol to shoot at flies inside his house!
A lawyer named H.C.R. Becher, who lived in nearby London, Ontario, wrote in his diary in 1865 that Lord Mount Cashell often came for dinner. He said Mount Cashell was "troublesome" as a client but could be "amusing" as a guest at first.
Some of his family members traveled back and forth between Britain and Canada. His daughter-in-law, Jane Dance, died at their home in Lobo in 1868 and was buried in a local cemetery.
Later Life and Return to Britain
In 1847, Stephen Moore was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honor for people who have done important work in science.
By 1870, his family had finished their business in Canada and moved back to Britain. Stephen Moore was said to have been engaged to marry a Miss Kennedy when he was very old, between 85 and 90 years old.
He passed away in Paddington, London, in October 1883, at the age of 91. His son, Stephen Moore, became the 4th Earl Mount Cashell. After him, his younger brother, Charles William Moore, became the 5th Earl.
