Stephen Mosher Wood (born June 10, 1832 – died December 24, 1920) was an important American politician. He helped make laws in Kansas. He served in the Kansas House of Representatives for Chase County, Kansas in 1871 and 1875. Later, he became a member of the Kansas Senate in 1876. He took over this role after S. R. Peters resigned.
Stephen Wood's Early Life
Stephen Mosher Wood was born on June 10, 1832. His hometown was Mount Gilead, Ohio. His parents were David and Esther Ward Wood. On May 22, 1853, he married Caroline Halsey Breese. They had four children together. Their children were Wallace Alfred, Clarence David, Carrie, and Sidney Breese Wood.
Military Service in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Stephen Wood served in the military. He was a First lieutenant in the 6th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. This group was part of a battalion led by his brother, Samuel Newitt Wood. Later, he worked as a Brigade Commissary of Subsistence. This job meant he helped supply food and other items for soldiers. He served in the Department of the Gulf.
Stephen Wood's Legacy
Stephen Wood was appointed a Regent for the Kansas State Agricultural College in 1877. He was chosen for this important role again in 1880. A Regent helps to guide and manage a college. Mr. Wood also gave land for a special camp. This camp was for the State YMCA and was located south of Elmdale, Kansas. Today, this camp is named after him.
