Stephen Robert Nockolds (May 10, 1909 – February 7, 1990) was an important British scientist. He was an expert in geochemistry, which is the study of the chemistry of the Earth's rocks and soil. He also specialized in petrology, the study of rocks and how they form. He was also a geologist, someone who studies the Earth's physical structure and history.

Nockolds was recognized for his great work. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), which is a very high honor for scientists in the UK. He also won the Murchison Medal from the Geological Society of London, a special award for contributions to geology.

Early Life and Education

Stephen Robert Nockolds was born in St Columb Major, a town in Cornwall, England. His father, Dr. Stephen Nockolds, was a surgeon from Brighton.

Young Robert went to school at Ascham St Vincent's School in Eastbourne and then to Felsted School. Even when he was a student, he showed a strong interest in rocks.

After school, he continued his studies at Manchester University. He then went on to earn his PhD degree at Trinity College, Cambridge, one of the oldest and most famous universities in the world.

Career and Achievements

After finishing his studies, Stephen Nockolds became a Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge. He taught petrology, the study of rocks, to students there.

In 1957, he became a Reader in Geochemistry at Cambridge. This meant he was a senior academic who led research and teaching in the field. He later became an Emeritus Reader, which is a title given to retired professors who are still highly respected.

In 1959, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society, a very prestigious group of leading scientists. He was also an Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of India.

In 1972, Nockolds retired from his teaching role at Cambridge. In the same year, he received the Murchison Medal for his important contributions to geology.

Key Publications

Stephen Nockolds wrote many important scientific papers. These papers were published in various journals and helped other scientists understand rocks and the Earth better.

One of his most well-known books is "Petrology for Students," published in 1978. This book helped many students learn about the science of rocks.

Personal Life

In 1932, Stephen Nockolds married Hilda Jackson. They were married until Hilda passed away in 1976.

Later in 1976, he married Patricia Horsley. Patricia had a large family, and Nockolds was warmly welcomed by them. Even though he didn't have his own children, he was loved by Patricia's family.

His friends often called him "Nocky" or "Bob." He was a respected scientist and a kind person.
