Stephen M. Thompson Sr. is an American basketball coach and a former professional player. He was born on December 2, 1968, in Los Angeles, California. Today, he works as an assistant coach at Oregon State University.

Stephen Thompson played basketball in college and then professionally. After his playing career, he became a coach.

Early Life and College

Stephen Thompson grew up in Los Angeles. He went to Crenshaw High School. After high school, he attended Syracuse University. While at Syracuse, he was a great student and athlete. He was even named the Big East's Scholar Athlete of the Year.

In 2000, Syracuse University honored him by selecting him for their Men's Basketball All-Century Team. This team includes some of the best players from the university's history.

Professional Playing Career

Thompson played basketball professionally after college. He played briefly in the NBA during the 1991-92 season. During that time, he played for two NBA teams:

He also played for several teams in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). In the CBA, he was recognized as the Rookie of the Year in 1991. The next year, in 1992, he was the CBA's top scorer.

Coaching Career

After his playing days, Stephen Thompson began coaching.

Cal State Los Angeles

He started coaching at California State University, Los Angeles. He was an assistant coach there from 2002 to 2005. Then, in 2005, he became the head coach for the men's basketball team. He led the team until 2014.

Oregon State University

In 2014, Thompson joined the coaching staff at Oregon State University. He became an assistant coach for their men's basketball program.

In 2022, he took on a new role at Oregon State. He became the assistant Athletic Director for Player Development. However, he returned to his role as an assistant coach for the 2023–24 season.

International Play

Stephen Thompson also represented the United States in international competitions.

  • In 1989, he won a gold medal at the Summer Universiade in Duisburg.
  • In 1987, he won a silver medal at the FIBA Under-19 World Championship in Bormio.
