Stephen M. Thompson Sr. (born December 2, 1968) is an American basketball coach and former professional player. He is currently an assistant coach at Oregon State University.

Stephen Thompson was born in Los Angeles, California. He went to Crenshaw High School and then to Syracuse University. While at Syracuse, he was named the Big East's Scholar Athlete of the Year. This award recognized him for being excellent in both sports and academics.

Playing Career Highlights

Stephen Thompson played basketball professionally for several years. He was known for his skills as a shooting guard.

NBA Experience

Thompson played briefly in the NBA during the 1991-92 season. He played 23 games for the Sacramento Kings and one game for the Orlando Magic.

Continental Basketball Association

Most of Thompson's professional playing career was in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He played for teams like the Rapid City Thrillers, Oklahoma City Cavalry, La Crosse Catbirds, Rochester Renegade, and Grand Rapids Mackers from 1990 to 1995.

CBA Awards

Thompson earned several awards in the CBA. In 1991, he was named the CBA Rookie of the Year. He was also chosen for the All-CBA Second Team in both 1991 and 1992.

Syracuse All-Century Team

In 2000, Stephen Thompson was honored by his college. He was selected to the Syracuse Men's Basketball All-Century Team. This team recognizes the best players in the university's history.

After his playing days, Stephen Thompson became a successful basketball coach.

Cal State Los Angeles

Thompson started his coaching career at California State University, Los Angeles. He worked as an assistant coach there starting in 2002. In 2005, he became the head coach of the men's basketball team. He led the team until 2014.

Oregon State University

In 2014, Thompson joined the coaching staff at Oregon State University. He worked as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program. In 2022, he took on a new role as the assistant Athletic Director for Player Development. However, he returned to his position as an assistant coach for the 2023–24 season.
