Stephen Warfield Gambrill (born October 2, 1873 – died December 19, 1938) was an American politician. He served in the United States Congress, representing Maryland. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
Early Life and Education
Stephen Gambrill was born on October 2, 1873, near Savage, Maryland. His parents were Stephen and Kate Gambrill. He went to local schools in his area.
He later attended Maryland Agricultural College, which is now known as the University of Maryland, College Park. He then studied law at Columbian College in Washington, D.C. This school is now called The George Washington University Law School. He finished his law studies in 1896.
In 1897, he became a lawyer, which means he was "admitted to the bar." He then started his law practice in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1900, Stephen Gambrill married Haddie D. Gorman. She passed away in 1923.
His Political Career
Stephen Gambrill began his career in government in Maryland. From 1920 to 1922, he was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. This group helps make laws for the state of Maryland.
In 1924, he served in the Maryland State Senate. This is another important part of the state government that helps create laws.
Later that year, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented the fifth district of Maryland. He took office on November 4, 1924, to fill a spot left empty by the death of Sidney E. Mudd II. He was re-elected six more times, serving in Congress until he died.
His Final Years
Stephen Warfield Gambrill passed away on December 19, 1938. He died in Washington, D.C., while still serving in Congress. He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, located in Suitland, Maryland.
