Steven William Breaston, born on August 20, 1983, is a former American football player. He was a wide receiver, which means he caught passes. He also played as a return specialist, running back punts and kickoffs. Steve played college football for the University of Michigan. The Arizona Cardinals picked him in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL draft. He also played for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Growing Up in Pennsylvania
Steve Breaston grew up in North Braddock, Pennsylvania. He went to Woodland Hills High School near Pittsburgh. In high school, Steve was a star football player for three years. He helped his team get a great record of 14 wins and only 1 loss. They even played in the Pennsylvania 4-A state championship game.
Steve helped Woodland Hills win the WPIAL Class AAAA title. In that big game, he ran for 219 yards. In 2001, he was named the Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year. Experts thought he was one of the best athletes in the country.
Steve was also chosen as Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's co-Player of the Year. He was named an All-American running quarterback. During his high school career, he ran for 2,545 yards and scored 37 touchdowns. In his senior year, he ran for 1,718 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also threw for 600 yards. He scored 34 touchdowns in total that year. Ten of his touchdown runs were longer than 50 yards!
As a senior, Steve returned two punts for touchdowns. One was a 93-yard return against McKeesport Area High School. He gained over 5,000 all-purpose yards in his last two seasons. Steve also played basketball and ran track. He won a district title in the 300-meter hurdles.
Playing College Football at Michigan

Steve Breaston played football for the Michigan Wolverines for four seasons, from 2003 to 2006. He became the best return player in Michigan's history. He also caught 156 passes, which is the fifth most in Michigan history.
Michigan Records and Achievements
Steve holds many records at Michigan. He is the all-time leader in punt returns with 127 returns for 1,599 yards. He also leads in kickoff returns with 81 returns for 1,993 yards.
He returned four punts for touchdowns, which ties the school record. He also returned one kickoff for a touchdown. His total of five return touchdowns is a Michigan record. His punt return records are also Big Ten Conference records.
On January 1, 2005, Steve set a Rose Bowl record. He gained 315 all-purpose yards in that game.
Steve received several honors during his college career:
- In 2003, he was named co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
- In 2006, he received the Big Ten Conference Sportsmanship Award.
- He was named Big Ten Football Special Teams Player of the Week four times.
Steve had ten games where he gained more than 200 all-purpose yards. This means he gained a lot of yards from running, catching, and returning kicks and punts.
Professional Football Career
Arizona Cardinals Years
The Arizona Cardinals picked Steve Breaston in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL draft. He was the 142nd player chosen overall.
In his first year, during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Steve returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown. This play was very important and helped the Cardinals win the game. By the end of 2007, he had 1,462 return yards for the Cardinals.
Steve had a great year in 2008. When another star receiver, Anquan Boldin, got hurt, Steve became a starting wide receiver. He played so well that he, Anquan Boldin, and Larry Fitzgerald became the fifth group of three teammates in NFL history to each gain over 1,000 receiving yards in one season.
With the Cardinals, Steve had a total of 140 catches for 1,810 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Kansas City Chiefs Years
On July 29, 2011, Steve Breaston signed a five-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. In a game against the Colts, Steve caught two touchdowns. These catches helped the Chiefs come back and win the game 28-24.
He finished that year with 785 receiving yards and two touchdowns. In 2012, he had 74 receiving yards. The Chiefs released him on February 19, 2013.
New Orleans Saints Tryout
On August 5, 2013, Steve signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints. However, he was released by the Saints just two weeks later, on August 19, 2013.
