Lohoré Steve Ulrich Gohouri (born 8 February 1981 – died December 2015) was a professional footballer from Ivory Coast. He played as a defender.

Steve Gohouri started his football journey in France. He played for youth teams like CS Brétigny and Paris Saint-Germain. After not getting many chances in France, he moved to Israel to play for Bnei Yehuda. Later, he spent seven seasons playing in Switzerland. There, he played for teams like Yverdon-Sport, Vaduz, and Young Boys.

In 2007, he joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany's top league, the Bundesliga. He also played for the Premier League team Wigan Athletic in England. Steve also proudly represented his home country, Ivory Coast, in international matches. Sadly, Steve Gohouri was reported missing in December 2015. He was later found dead in the Rhine river on New Year's Eve.

Starting Out in Football

Steve Gohouri was born in Treichville, Ivory Coast. When he was five, his family moved to France. He grew up near Paris and started playing football at CS Brétigny. He even played in the same youth team as famous player Patrice Evra. Steve then spent two years at Paris Saint-Germain. However, he didn't get to play for their main team.

In the middle of the 1999–2000 season, he moved to Israel. He joined Bnei Yehuda. Steve made his first appearance on 5 February 2000. He scored a goal in his very first game! In his next game, he scored two more goals. Fans quickly loved him. He scored four goals in 13 games that season, helping his team stay in the Israeli Premier League.

Playing in Switzerland

After his time in Israel, Steve moved to Switzerland. He joined Yverdon-Sport. He was first signed as a striker and scored nine goals in his first season. His team was then moved down to a lower league. After that, Steve mostly played as a central defender. He could also play as a right-back or left-back.

In 2003, he went on loan to Bologna in Italy for six months. But he didn't play any games in Italy's top league, Serie A. The next summer, he joined Vaduz. In July 2004, he played his first game in a European competition. This was a UEFA Cup match. In September 2005, he signed a four-year deal with Young Boys.

Time at Borussia Mönchengladbach

On 28 December 2006, Steve Gohouri moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany. He signed a three-and-a-half-year contract. He played his first game in the Bundesliga on 27 January 2007.

In September 2008, Steve had some issues with the club. He was sent to play with the reserve team. But he returned to the main team later that month. In October 2008, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga. He scored with a header in a 2–2 draw. In summer 2009, he was again moved to the reserves. He left the club in December 2009.

Playing in England with Wigan

On 12 January 2010, Steve Gohouri joined Wigan Athletic. They were a team in the Premier League in England. He signed a contract until the end of that season. He scored his first goal for Wigan on 3 May 2010 against Hull City. His goal made the game 2–2 and meant Hull City was moved down to a lower league.

On 7 May 2010, Steve signed a new two-year contract with Wigan. He stayed with the club until the end of the 2011–12 season. In the 2010–11 season, he played 28 games. He even scored a goal against Liverpool in a 1–1 draw. He got another contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2013. However, the 2011–12 season was tough for Steve. He was sent off in a game against Tottenham Hotspur. He also played fewer games, only 10 in the league. Wigan released him when his contract ended in 2012.

Back in Israel: Maccabi Tel Aviv

At the start of the 2012–13 season, Steve returned to Israel. He joined Maccabi Tel Aviv. He played 10 league games as a defender. He left the team in the middle of the season.

A Short Spell in Greece

On 29 June 2013, Steve Gohouri joined Skoda Xanthi in the Greek Superleague. He played his first game in the Europa League. He played two more league games before leaving the club in September 2013.

Playing Again in Germany

In October 2014, Steve signed a contract with a German team, FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. They played in the 3. Liga. The club extended his contract for another six months in December 2014.

On 3 December 2015, he signed a one-year contract with TSV Steinbach. This team played in the Regionalliga.

Playing for His Country: Ivory Coast

Steve Gohouri played his first game for the Ivory Coast national team in August 2006. This was against Senegal. In March 2007, he scored his first two goals for his country. These goals came in a friendly game against Mauritius. He also scored the first goal in a 3–0 win against Madagascar in a qualifying match for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.

His Passing

On 12 December 2015, Steve Gohouri was reported missing. His family had filed a report. He was last seen at his team's Christmas party. He was supposed to visit his family in Paris but never arrived. On 2 January 2016, German police confirmed that Steve Gohouri had been found. He was found dead on New Year's Eve in the Rhine river near Krefeld.
