Exploring Stewart Manor's Past

Stewart Manor was once known as Sunrise Gardens. This name was used between 1925 and 1927. It came from a housing development built in the area.

In 1927, the people living there decided to change the name. They chose Stewart Manor. This new name honors the community's connection to the Stewart Manor station. This train station is part of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located in the nearby village of Garden City. The station itself is named after Alexander Turney Stewart, a famous person from the past.

Stewart Manor officially became a village in 1927. This meant it could have its own local government.

The building where the village government meets is called the Stewart Manor Municipal Building. It also houses the village's fire department. This building was first built in 1936. It has been made larger twice, once in 1987 and again in 2002.
