Stigma (written as Ϛ for uppercase and ϛ for lowercase) is a special sign that was once part of the Greek alphabet. It was created by combining two other Greek letters: Sigma (σ) and Tau (τ). Stigma was also used as a symbol for the number 6 in the ancient system of Greek numerals.

What is Stigma?

Stigma is not a letter you see in the modern Greek alphabet today. Think of it as an older, special character. It was mainly used in the past to write down numbers. This was a common way for ancient Greeks to use their letters as numbers.

How Stigma Was Used

The ancient Greeks had a system where each letter stood for a number. Stigma was given the value of 6. This meant that whenever they needed to write the number 6, they could use the sign ϛ. This system was different from the numbers we use today (like 1, 2, 3), which are called Arabic numerals.

For example, if you saw a Greek text from a long time ago and it mentioned "ϛ books," it would mean "6 books." It was a simple way to keep track of things using the letters they already knew.
