About Stiles Junction
Stiles Junction is located in the state of Wisconsin. It is found within Oconto County. The community is not a separate city or village. Instead, it is a part of the larger area known as the town of Stiles.
Its History
The community of Stiles Junction got its name from the Stiles family. They were early settlers in the area. The family originally came from a place called Stilesville, Indiana.
The Railroads
Stiles Junction was an important spot because of its railroads. It was where two major train lines crossed paths. This type of crossing is called a diamond crossing. Imagine two train tracks making an "X" shape.
- One line belonged to the Chicago and North Western Railway (C&NW). This line ran from east to west. It connected the towns of Clintonville and Oconto.
- The other line was part of the Milwaukee Road. This track went from north to south. It linked the city of Milwaukee to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Today, the train line that went east from Stiles Junction is no longer used. The other tracks are still active. They are now owned and operated by the Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad.
