Stone Cole Smartt, born on October 4, 1998, is an American professional football player. He plays as a tight end for the Los Angeles Chargers in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the pros, he played college football at Old Dominion University.
Growing Up and High School Football
Stone Smartt grew up in Loomis, California. He went to Del Oro High School there. During his high school years, he was a star player on the football team. He played as a quarterback, which is the player who throws the ball.
Stone threw for over 3,000 yards in high school. He also scored 29 touchdowns. In the 2015-2016 season, he led his team to win a Division II-AA State championship. The next year, he led Del Oro to another state championship game. Stone was also a great basketball player for his high school team. After high school, he decided to play college football at Northern Arizona University.
Playing Football in College
In 2017, Stone Smartt started his college football journey at Northern Arizona University. He played in only two games that year. In 2018, he transferred to Riverside City College. There, he had an amazing season.
At Riverside City, Stone played in 12 games. He threw for 2,754 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also ran for 583 yards and scored nine rushing touchdowns. He was named a First-Team JUCO All-American. He also won the California State Offensive Player of the Year award. He broke several school records for passing.
In 2019, Stone transferred to Old Dominion University. He continued to play quarterback there. In 2020, his season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he changed his position from quarterback to wide receiver. He caught 17 passes for 167 yards that season.
Becoming a Pro Football Player
After college, Stone Smartt was not chosen in the 2022 NFL draft. However, he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as a free agent. This means the Chargers offered him a contract to join their team. He has been playing for the Chargers since 2022.
