Stony Point Battlefield is a very important historical place in Rockland County, New York. It is famous because the Battle of Stony Point happened here in 1779. This battle was a big event during the American Revolutionary War. Today, the site is a National Historic Landmark and has a museum for visitors.

The Story of Stony Point Battlefield

This special place was bought and protected in the late 1890s. It first opened to the public in 1902. People wanted to remember the brave soldiers who fought here.

In 1929, a big celebration happened for the 150th anniversary of the battle. Over 8,000 people came to see it! There were military units showing how soldiers used to look and march. A modern airplane even flew over the battlefield and dropped small American flags.

A Museum and More Land

A museum was built at the site in 1936. This museum helps tell the story of the battle. In the 1940s, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission started looking after the battlefield. They also bought more land around it to protect the area.

In 1961, Stony Point Battlefield was named a National Historic Landmark. This means it's a place of great national importance. It is one of only a few "Paths through History" sites in Rockland County.

By the 1980s, the park included all the public land on the peninsula. This also included the historic Stony Point Lighthouse, which was built in 1826.

What You Can Do There Today

Today, the site is called the Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site. You can visit the museum to learn about the battle and the lighthouse.

The park offers many fun and educational activities. You can learn about what life was like for soldiers in the 1700s. There are even demonstrations of cannons and muskets being fired! You can also see how people cooked long ago.

The park also has nature walks and guided tours of the battlefield. There are special activities just for kids too!

The park is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sundays, it's open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. You can find it just north of the village of Stony Point, off U.S. Route 9W.
