Storm Boy is a classic 1976 Australian film. It is a drama based on a popular 1964 book by Colin Thiele. The story is about a lonely boy who lives in a wild coastal area with his quiet father. He becomes friends with some pelicans. This movie was the third main film made by the South Australian Film Corporation. It is seen as an important part of the "New Wave" of Australian movies from the 1970s. The film was funded by the SAFC, Seven Network, and the Australian Film Commission.
Story of Storm Boy
The film follows a young boy named Mike (Greg Rowe). He feels lonely as he explores the wild coast of South Australia's Coorong. This area is near where the Murray River meets the sea. Mike and his father, 'Hide Away' Tom (Peter Cummins), live by themselves in the sandy dunes facing the Southern Ocean.
Mike is looking for a friend. He meets another person living alone in the wilderness. This is Fingerbone Bill (David Gulpilil), an Aboriginal man. Fingerbone Bill gives Mike the nickname "Storm Boy." He asks the boy to help him care for three baby pelicans whose parents are gone.
As the pelicans grow, Mike's dad tells him he must let the birds go back into the wild. But one special pelican, whom Mike named 'Mr Percival,' comes back. Mr Percival and Mike become very close friends. Sadly, Mr Percival is later shot by duck hunters. With the wise help of Fingerbone Bill, Mike learns about how life goes on. His father then finally lets him go to school in a nearby village for the first time.
