Stow Hill is a special area in the city of Newport, South Wales. It is called a "community" and also an "electoral ward." This means it's a local area with its own local government representatives.

Stow Hill is surrounded by different landmarks. To the east, you'll find the River Usk. To the south, there are George Street and Cardiff Road. The Great Western Main Line railway is to the southwest. To the north, you'll see Caerau Crescent, Caerau Road, Godfrey Road, Devon Place, and Mill Street. Inside this area are the neighborhoods of St. Woolos and Baneswell.

Exploring Newport's City Centre

This community covers most of Newport's main city area. It's where you'll find many of the city's big shops. It's also a popular spot for fun and entertainment.

Stow Hill is home to some important historical places. You can visit Newport Castle right by the River Usk. There's also St. Woolos Cathedral located on top of Stow Hill itself. Another notable place is Havelock Street Presbyterian Church. In 1887, the Boys' Brigade movement in Wales started here, thanks to George Philip Reynolds. Legend says that Saint Gwynllyw was the very first person to live in Stow Hill.

Even though it's a busy city centre, many people live here. Most of the homes are Victorian terraced houses. These are rows of houses built close together, which is common for older city areas.

How Local Government Works in Stow Hill

Stow Hill is an "electoral ward," which is the same area as the community. This ward gets to choose two city councillors. These councillors represent the people of Stow Hill on the Newport City Council. They help make decisions for the city.

Since 1995, the Labour Party has usually represented Stow Hill. However, the Conservative councillors were also elected between 2004 and 2012.

Recently, there was a change to the ward's boundaries. This was done to make sure each councillor represents about the same number of people. Because of this, the Mon Bank area will move from the nearby Pillgwenlly ward to Stow Hill. This change will start with the local elections in 2022.
