The Strauch's racerunner (scientific name: Eremias strauchi) is a type of lizard. It belongs to the family called Lacertidae, which includes many different kinds of lizards. This species is originally from Western Asia. Scientists do not recognize any different types or subspecies of Strauch's racerunner.

What's in a Name?

The second part of the lizard's scientific name, strauchi, was chosen to honor a Russian scientist. This scientist, Alexander Strauch, studied reptiles and amphibians.

Where Do Strauch's Racerunners Live?

You can find Eremias strauchi in several countries in Western Asia. These include southern Armenia, southern Azerbaijan, northeastern Iran, and northeastern Turkey.

Preferred Homes of the Racerunner

Strauch's racerunners like to live in shrubland. This type of habitat is an area with many bushes and shrubs. They can be found at different heights, from about 300 meters (around 984 feet) up to 3,500 meters (about 11,483 feet) above sea level.

How Long Do Racerunners Live?

Scientists studied 18 adult Strauch's racerunners in eastern Turkey to learn about their lifespan and size. They used a method called skeletochronology, which looks at growth rings in bones. This is similar to how you can tell a tree's age by its rings.

Lifespan and Size Details

The longest a male racerunner was observed to live was 7 years. Females lived a bit less, up to 5 years. When it came to size, males were about 61.10 millimeters (around 2.4 inches) long from their snout to their vent (the opening near the tail). Females were very similar in size, averaging 60.82 millimeters (about 2.39 inches).

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Eremias strauchi is an oviparous species. This means that the female racerunner lays eggs. The young lizards then hatch from these eggs.
