The Story of Streets Ice Cream
Streets ice cream was started by a man named Edwin "Ted" Street and his wife Daisy. They began making ice cream way back in 1920 in a place called Corrimal, New South Wales.
Ted first set up a place to store and send out ice creams in Bexley. Later, he built a factory in Turrella, a suburb of Sydney. This factory made ice creams until 1996.
In 1996, the main production moved to a new, bigger factory in Minto. Today, most of the creamy ice creams are made at the Minto factory. However, some of the water-based ice treats are brought in from China.
Famous Ice Creams and Worker Rights
In 1953, Streets introduced the famous Paddle Pop. This ice cream became super popular! By the year 2000, over 90 million Paddle Pops had been sold. It's known as one of the world's best-selling ice creams for its size.
In 2017, there was a discussion about the pay and working conditions for the factory workers at Streets. The company wanted to change how workers were paid. The union that represented the workers, the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, was worried this would mean less pay for them.
The union asked people in Australia to support the workers. They wanted a fair agreement for everyone. After some talks, a new agreement was reached in November 2017.
The Streets Logo
Streets uses a special logo called the Heartbrand. This heart-shaped logo is shared by many other ice cream brands around the world. All these brands are owned by the same big company, Unilever.
For example, you might see the Heartbrand logo on ice creams like Wall's in the United Kingdom, Good Humor in the United States, and Algida in Italy. Even though the names are different, they are all part of the same ice cream family!
From 1962 to 1998, the Streets logo looked a bit different. It was a badge with the word "Streets" on a background of red and white stripes. They made a small change to this design in 1968.
