The Story of Streets
Streets was started in 1920 by Edwin "Ted" Street and his wife Daisy. They began their ice cream journey in Corrimal, New South Wales. Ted first set up a place to deliver ice cream in Bexley. Later, he built a factory in Turrella, a suburb of Sydney. Ice cream was made there until 1996.
Moving to a New Factory
In 1996, the production of Streets ice cream moved to a new, modern factory. This new factory is located in Minto. Today, most of the creamy ice cream products are made at the Minto factory. However, some water-based ice creams are brought in from China.
The Famous Paddle Pop
One of Streets' most famous ice creams is the Paddle Pop. It was first introduced in 1953. The Paddle Pop became incredibly popular. By the year 2000, over ninety million Paddle Pops had been sold. It is known as the world's best-selling ice cream per person.
Joining the Unilever Family
In 1960, the Streets company was purchased by Unilever. Unilever is a very large international company. In the early 1980s, Streets also bought another ice cream company. This company was called AMSCOL and was based in Adelaide. AMSCOL had been making ice cream since 1922.
A Discussion About Work Conditions
In 2017, there was a discussion about the pay and conditions for factory workers at Streets. Unilever wanted to change the existing agreement. The union that represents the workers, the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, was concerned. They said workers might face a big pay cut. The union asked people to not buy Streets products to show support. However, a solution was found in November 2017.
Streets Logo
Streets uses a special logo that looks like a heart. This Heartbrand logo is shared with many other ice cream brands around the world. All these brands are owned by Unilever. Some of these brands include Wall's in the UK, HB Ice Cream in Ireland, and Good Humor in the United States.
From 1962 to 1998, the Streets logo looked different. It was a badge with the word "Streets" on it. The background of the badge had red and white stripes going up and down.
