The Strelitz Buildings are historic buildings located at 30 Mouat Street in Fremantle, Western Australia. They were built in 1897 for two brothers, Paul and Richard Strelitz. In October 1994, these buildings were officially recognized and added to the Western Australian State Heritage Register. This means they are important historical places that need to be protected.

Who Were the Strelitz Brothers?

Paul and Richard Strelitz were important merchants in Fremantle. They bought the land for their buildings in 1896. By 1897, their new warehouse and offices were complete. The brothers were known for their business as merchants and shipping agents.

Paul Strelitz: A Merchant and Consul

Paul Strelitz first arrived in Melbourne, Australia, in 1886. He moved to Western Australia in 1894 because he heard about the gold discoveries there. Paul became a successful merchant in Fremantle. He was also one of the first councillors for the East Fremantle Municipal Council. In 1904, the Dutch government chose Paul Strelitz to be their consul in Western Australia. A consul is a representative who helps citizens of their country who are living or traveling abroad.

Richard Strelitz: A Shipping Agent and Vice Consul

Richard Strelitz worked for a German shipping company. He was sent to Victoria in 1892. After six months, he moved to Western Australia. When his brother Paul arrived in Fremantle, Richard left his job. Together, they started their own company, Strelitz Brothers. They worked as merchants and shipping agents. In 1897, Richard became the consul for Denmark. Later, in 1903, he also became the vice consul for Sweden and Norway.

What Are the Buildings Like?

The Strelitz Buildings are thought to have been designed by an architect named JF Allen. His other buildings in Perth look similar. The Fremantle Council approved the building plans on January 5, 1897. The building has a warehouse at the back. In front, there are two floors of office space. Many businesses rented offices here. One of them was the architect firm Cavanagh and Keogh. They designed many buildings in Fremantle.

A Future President's Office

Between 1904 and 1906, a man named Herbert Hoover had an office in the Strelitz Buildings. At that time, he was a mining engineer. He worked for a company called Bewick Moreing & Co. Years later, Herbert Hoover became a very famous person. He was the 31st President of the United States.
