Stronghold is a small, unincorporated community in Modoc County, California. An unincorporated community is a place where people live that does not have its own local government. It is located about 3 miles (5 km) northwest of the town of Newell.

Why the Name Stronghold?
The name "Stronghold" comes from an important historical event. It was named after a place called Captain Jack's Stronghold. This was a natural fortress used by the Modoc people during the Modoc War.
The Modoc War happened between 1872 and 1873. Captain Jack's Stronghold was a very strong defensive position. It was located nearby in what is now the Lava Beds National Monument.
