Newell is a small community in Modoc County, California, in the United States. It is known as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area that the U.S. Census Bureau identifies for gathering statistics, but it's not an officially incorporated town with its own local government.
Newell is located about 50 miles (80 km) west-northwest of Alturas. It sits at an elevation of about 4,042 feet (1,232 m) above sea level. In 2020, the population of Newell was 301 people. This number was a bit lower than in 2010, when 449 people lived there.

History of Newell
The town of Newell was named to honor Frederick Haynes Newell. He was an important person who directed the United States Reclamation Service. This service worked on projects to manage water and land in the United States.
