Strum is a small village located in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, United States. It sits right along the Buffalo River. In 2010, about 1,114 people lived there.

A Look at Strum's History

Strum got its name from a man named Louis Strum, who was a friend of Congressman William T. Price. The village was first called Tilden. This name honored a politician named Samuel J. Tilden. However, on January 1, 1890, the village officially changed its name to Strum.

Strum is located at 44°33′1″N 91°23′31″W / 44.55028°N 91.39194°W / 44.55028; -91.39194. The village covers an area of about 1.28 square miles (3.32 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Crystal Lake and the Buffalo River

Strum is home to Crystal Lake, which is a reservoir on the Buffalo River. This lake is a great spot for fishing! You can find different types of fish here, like trout, panfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike.

The Buffalo River starts west of Osseo and flows all the way to the Mississippi River. The part of the river from Strum heading east is known for its trout fishing.

Education in Strum

Strum is part of the Eleva-Strum Central School District. In the past, both Eleva and Strum had their own elementary schools. Now, all the elementary students go to one central school located between the two villages on U.S. Highway 10.

Eleva-Strum High School has a gym, an auditorium, and a cafeteria. The school's sports teams have been very successful! Since 2004, they have made many appearances in state tournaments.

  • The boys' basketball team went to state three times and won the 2008 Division 4 state championship.
  • The girls' basketball team went to state once.
  • The golf team went to state three times and won the 2008 Division 3 state championship.
  • The football team went to state twice and won the 2007 Division 7 state championship.

In 2008, Eleva-Strum was the only team in Wisconsin to win three state titles in one year!

Strum has four city parks, and three of them are located along Crystal Lake. This makes them great places to enjoy the water!

Viking Recreational Area

The village is also home to the Viking Recreational Area. This area offers a lot of activities, including:

  • A 9-hole golf course (par 36)
  • A campground
  • A bar and grill
  • A shooting range

Buffalo River Trail

The Buffalo River trail runs right through Strum. This trail is perfect for riding ATVs and bicycles. It follows an old railroad path from Fairchild to Mondovi. You can get onto the trail at any road crossing.

Sports Teams in Strum

Strum is home to the Beef River Bullfrogs, an amateur baseball team. This team was started in 1996 and plays in the South division of the Chippewa River Baseball League. The Bullfrogs play their games at Spangberg Park, which is named after Ruby Spangberg, a long-time mayor of Strum.
