Stydd Brook facts for kids
Stydd Brook is a small river, also called a watercourse, located in Lancashire, England. It's an important part of the local natural environment.
This brook begins high up on Gannow Fell, which is a hill southwest of the beautiful Forest of Bowland. From there, Stydd Brook flows south. Its journey ends when it joins a much larger river, the River Ribble, near the village of Ribchester. Along its way, Stydd Brook passes by areas like Black Plantation, then flows between Moor Nook Farm and Davies Gate, and finally moves through Stydd Wood.
What is a Tributary?
A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger river or lake. Think of it like a branch joining a main tree trunk. Stydd Brook has a few of these smaller streams that add to its water.
Boyce's Brook
One of Stydd Brook's main tributaries is Boyce's Brook. This brook actually starts when two other smaller streams meet. This meeting point is called a confluence.
- Cowley Brook: This stream flows south from Longridge Fell.
- Page Brook: This stream gets its water from the Spade Mill Reservoirs near Longridge and flows east.
These two streams join together near a small village called Buckley Gate. From there, Boyce's Brook flows southeast through Buckley Wood. It then goes around the northern edge of Ribchester before finally meeting Stydd Brook under Stone Bridge.
Duddel Brook
Another stream that joins Stydd Brook is Duddel Brook. It meets Stydd Brook a little further upstream from where Boyce's Brook joins. Duddel Brook starts near Lennox Farm, on the eastern side of Gannow Fell. It flows south through several woods, including Hougher Fall Wood, Over Hey Wood, Duddel Wood, and Little Stydd Wood, before adding its waters to Stydd Brook.
