Subburaman Thirunavukkarasar (born 13 July 1949) is an Indian politician. He was the State President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee until February 2019. He also served as a secretary for the All India Congress Committee (AICC) of the Indian National Congress (INC) party.

His journey into politics began in 1977. He was helped by M. G. Ramachandran, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Ramachandran started the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party in 1972. He chose Thirunavukkarasar, who was a lawyer, to run for election in the Aranthangi assembly constituency.

Thirunavukkarasar won the election at age 27. He became the Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He held this position until 1980. From 1980 to 1987, he was a state minister in Tamil Nadu. He managed important areas like Industries, Housing, and Handlooms.

Later, he became a member of the Lok Sabha. This is the lower house of the Parliament of India. He represented the Pudukottai area. He also served as a Union Minister of State. He was in charge of shipping, and later, telecommunications and information technology.

Thirunavukkarasar was also a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for some time. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of India's Parliament. He represented the state of Madhya Pradesh. Currently, he is a Member of Parliament for the Tiruchirappalli constituency in the Lok Sabha.

Early Life and Education

S. Thirunavukkarasar was born on 13 July 1949, in Theeyathoor, Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu. He studied at Madras University in Chennai. He also attended Venkateshwara University in Tirupathi. He earned degrees in M.A. and B.L. (which means he studied law).

Political Journey and Parties

Thirunavukkarasar was elected from the Aranthangi assembly area many times. He won every election there from 1977 to 1996.

Forming New Political Parties

In 1991, he started a new party called Anna Puratchi Thalaivar Thamilga Munnetra Kazhagam with K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran. This party later joined with the AIADMK in 1996.

In 1996, he started another new party called MGR Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. This happened because of disagreements with Jayalalitha. In the 2001 Tamil Nadu elections, his party had three candidates, and two of them won. In 2002, his party joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Serving as a Union Minister

He won the Pudukottai Lok Sabha Constituency election in 1999. After that, he became a Union Minister of State. He was in charge of Shipping and then Communication and Information Technology until 2004.

Role in Indian National Congress

He was appointed as a secretary of the AICC (All India Congress Committee) by the INC president, Sonia Gandhi. As an AICC secretary, he was responsible for the state of Telangana. He also helped choose Jana Reddy as the leader of the opposition there. Thirunavukkarasar was also invited to open the Tamil Nadu branch of Indian National Congress Overseas in New York, USA.

In 2017, he became the State President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. Before that, he served as the secretary of the All India Congress Committee from 2010 to 2017.

Thirunavukkarasar held important roles in the government. He worked to improve industries, housing, and healthcare in Tamil Nadu.

Developing Industries in Tamil Nadu

When he was the Industries, Handlooms, and Commercial Tax minister, he also served as the deputy speaker of the assembly. He helped create Tamil Nadu Magnesite Limited (TANMAG) and Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TAMIN). These companies explore and use mineral resources in the state. He also set up several State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOTs). Many paper and sugar mills were also started during his time.

Focus on Education and Health

He believed that education was very important for people's growth. In the 1980s, he helped establish many schools, arts and science colleges, and polytechnic institutes. He also worked on building small dams in rivers to store water. He started hospitals and primary health centers. These efforts were made even before people were widely aware of the importance of water storage and health care.

Contributions as Union Shipping Minister

As the shipping minister, Thirunavukkarasar thought that learning about the sea was vital for the shipping industry. He stressed the importance of technology and scientific training. He encouraged the National Institute of Port Management to train more people. He also opened new buildings for the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET).

Winning Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

He won the Aranthangi seat in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections multiple times. He won in 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, and 1996.

Lok Sabha Election Results

He won the Pudukottai Lok Sabha seat in 1999. He also won the Tiruchirappalli Lok Sabha seat in 2019. He contested and lost elections in Pudukottai in 1998, and in Ramanathapuram in 2009 and 2014.

Rajya Sabha Election Result

In 2004, he won the election to become a member of the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh.

Film Career

Thirunavukkarasar also had a brief career in films. He worked as a film distributor. He wrote the story for and produced the film Maruthu Pandi (1990). He also acted in the main role in the film Agni Paarvai (1992).

Personal Life
