Subburaman Thirunavukkarasar was born on July 13, 1949. He is an Indian politician. He was the State President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee until February 2, 2019. He also served as a secretary for the Indian National Congress (INC) party.

His journey into politics began in 1977. He was helped by M. G. Ramachandran, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Ramachandran started the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party in 1972. He was getting ready for his first elections for the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1977.

Ramachandran chose Thirunavukkarasar, who was a lawyer, to run for the Aranthangi assembly constituency. Thirunavukkarasar won the election when he was just 27 years old. He became the Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He held this position until 1980.

Later, he worked as a state minister in Tamil Nadu from 1980 to 1987. During this time, he was in charge of important areas like Industries, Housing, and Handlooms. After that, he became a member of the Lok Sabha. This is the lower house of India's Parliament. He won the election from the Pudukottai area. He also served as a Union Minister, first for shipping, then for telecommunications and information technology.

Thirunavukkarasar was also a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a short time. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of the Parliament of India, representing the state of Madhya Pradesh. He is currently a Member of Parliament. He represents the Tiruchirappalli constituency in the Lok Sabha.

Early Life and Education

S. Thirunavukkarasar was born in Theeyathoor, Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu. This was on July 13, 1949. He studied for his M.A. and B.L. degrees. He attended Madras University in Chennai and Venkateshwara University in Tirupathi.

Political Journey and Roles

Thirunavukkarasar was elected from the Aranthangi legislative assembly area in every election from 1977 to 1996. He left his seat on October 15, 1999.

In 1991, he started a party called Anna Puratchi Thalaivar Thamilga Munnetra Kazhagam with K. K. S. S. R. Ramachandran. This party later joined with AIADMK in 1996.

He then started a new party called MGR Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in 1996. This happened because of disagreements with Jayalalitha. In the 2001 legislative assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, his party had three candidates. Two of them were elected. In 2002, his party joined with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He won the Pudukottai Lok Sabha Constituency in 1999. He served as a Union Minister of State. He was in charge of Shipping and later, Communication and Information Technology until 2004.

He was chosen as the secretary of the AICC by the INC president, Sonia Gandhi. As an AICC secretary, he was responsible for Telangana. He helped choose Jana Reddy as the leader of the opposition. Thirunavukkarasar was also invited to open the Tamil Nadu part of Indian National Congress Overseas in New York, USA.

Achievements as a State Minister

Thirunavukkarasar was the Industries, Handlooms, and Commercial Tax minister. This was during the time of the Ramachandran cabinet. At the same time, he was also the Deputy Speaker of the assembly.

He helped create Tamil Nadu Magnesite Limited (TANMAG) and Tamil Nadu Minerals Limited (TAMIN). These companies explore for mineral resources in the state. Thirunavukkarasar also set up several State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOTs). Many paper and sugar mills were also started because of his efforts.

He believed that education helps people grow. So, in the 1980s, he established schools, arts and science colleges, and polytechnic institutes. He also built small dams in rivers and started hospitals and primary health centers. He did all this when people were not very aware of water storage and health care.

Minister in the Government of India

When he was the shipping minister, Thirunavukkarasar thought that learning about the sea was important for the shipping industry. He stressed how important technology and scientific training were. He encouraged the National Institute of Port Management to train more people. He also opened new buildings for the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET).

Relationship with the Congress Party

When Sonia Gandhi became the president of the Congress Party in 1998, Thirunavukkarasar's party, MGRADMK, joined with the Congress. They worked together for the 1998 Lok Sabha elections.

Thirunavukkarasar ran for the Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha constituency. This was at a time when many other Congress leaders did not want to run. In 2017, he was appointed the State President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. Before that, he served as the secretary of the All India Congress Committee from 2010 to 2017.

Electoral Journey Highlights

Thirunavukkarasar has had a long career in elections. He won the Arantangi Assembly constituency multiple times in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, starting from 1977. He also won the Pudukottai Lok Sabha Constituency in 1999. In 2019, he won the Tiruchirappalli seat in the Lok Sabha. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh in 2004.

Film Career

Thirunavukkarasar also worked briefly as a film distributor. He wrote the story for and produced the film Maruthu Pandi (1990). He also acted in the main role in the film Agni Paarvai (1992).

Personal Life

Su. Thirunavukkarasar married Jayanthi in 1978. They have three sons and two daughters.
