Early Life and Work
Succès Masra was born in Chad on August 30, 1983. He went to school in Chad, Cameroon, and France, where he studied economics.
After finishing his studies, he began working as an economist for the African Development Bank. In 2018, he left this job to start a new career in politics in his home country.
A New Voice in Politics
Starting "The Transformers"
On April 29, 2018, Masra created a new political party called Les Transformateurs. He said he wanted to bring people from Chad together, both those living inside and outside the country. His goal was to help Chad become a social democracy, a country where the government works to make life fair for everyone.
Masra often had different ideas about how to run the country than the president at the time, Idriss Déby.
The 2021 Election
In 2020, President Déby announced he would run for president again in the 2021 election. Masra disagreed with this decision. He tried to run for president himself, but his request was turned down.
Because of this, Masra and his supporters held protests. The government used force to stop the protests. For his safety, Masra had to stay at the United States embassy in N'Djamena, the capital city, for six days.
Masra asked President Déby to delay the election so they could have a big discussion with all political groups. Déby said no and went on to win the election.
A Time of Big Changes
On April 20, 2021, it was announced that President Déby had passed away. The military then took control of the government and formed a group called the Transitional Military Council (CMT). The leader of this council was Déby's son, Mahamat.
Masra called this takeover a "coup d'état," which means taking over a government by force. He said it was time for Chad to move toward democracy.
Disagreements and Time Away
The new military government said it wanted to talk with opposition groups like Masra's. However, Masra and his party did not join the talks because they could not agree on the rules for the discussion. This led to more protests in September 2022.
In October 2022, the leader of the military government, Mahamat Déby, announced he would stay in power for two more years. This caused more protests. After these events, Masra felt it was not safe for him, so he left Chad. He lived in the United States for about a year.
Returning Home
On August 11, 2023, Masra announced that he planned to return to Chad. At first, the government in Chad was against his return. But after leaders from other African countries helped them talk, they made an agreement.
The agreement allowed Masra to return to Chad safely. Not long after he came back, on January 1, 2024, he was appointed as the new Prime Minister of Chad.
The 2024 Presidential Election
On March 3, 2024, Masra announced he would run for president in the election scheduled for May 6. He was the candidate for his party, Les Transformateurs.
This was the first time in Chad's history that a Prime Minister ran against the current President in an election.
When the results were announced on May 9, the government said that Mahamat Déby had won with over 61% of the vote. Masra received about 18.5% of the vote. Masra did not agree with the official results and said on social media that he had actually won.
On May 22, 2024, Masra resigned from his position as prime minister.
Later Events
On the morning of May 16, 2025, Succès Masra was arrested at his home. The government said his arrest was connected to serious disagreements that led to clashes in the Logone Occidental Region a few days earlier.
On August 9, 2025, a court found him guilty. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
